Slots and Scenarios

A slot is a dynamic placeholder that waits (passive) or calls out for content (active). The content it contains is dictated by either the Add Items to Slot action or by using a renderer to fill the slot. Slots and scenarios work together to deliver content to the page; renderers specify how the content should be presented.

A player inserts cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode into the designated slot on the machine. The computer then activates a series of reels that spin and stop at locations to rearrange symbols, based on the outcome of a random number sequence generated by the RNG. When the symbols match a paytable sequence, the player earns credits based on the amount of the matching symbols and the machine’s denomination settings.

In football, a slot receiver is the third-string wide receiver who typically plays on passing downs and is responsible for running precise routes that are often shorter than those run by boundary receivers. Great ones, such as Wes Welker, are extremely effective in the deep game by combining their speed with route-running savvy to create separation against linebackers and cornerbacks. Slot receivers also help block and are often used on trick plays like end-arounds. A slot receiver’s performance is largely dependent on his ability to play in-tune with the quarterback’s timing and read coverage. In addition to their skill sets, slot receivers are able to stretch the defense horizontally with their speed and vertically through their quick breaks.
