What Is a Slot?

A slot is a dynamic placeholder that waits for content (passive) or calls out for it via a renderer (active). Slots and scenarios work together to deliver content to the page, while renderers specify how that content will be presented. It’s not recommended that you use multiple scenarios to feed the same slot because it can cause unpredictable results.

A slot is a slit or other narrow opening, especially one for receiving something, as a coin or letter. It can also refer to a position, especially in a machine or on a vehicle. A slot can also be a small opening in the wall of an old home or building that is used for electrical wiring. The term is also commonly used in sports to describe the area in front of the goal between the face-off circles on an ice hockey rink. A slot can also refer to a spot on a racetrack that is unused by other cars, but still able to be used for racing. The 1899 Liberty Bell machine, manufactured by Charles Fey, had two slots that were open when it was in operation. It is now a California Historical Landmark. The Liberty Bell is believed to have been the first of many mechanical devices that allowed people to place bets with coins, and it introduced the public to the concept of a coin-operated gambling machine. The machine was the inspiration for later slot machines.
